Eczema is a chronic, allergic condition also referred to as Atopic Dermatitis. Eczema usually commences in babies but children and adults can also develop Eczema. Eczema is usually coupled with a personal or family history of allergies.
Eczema is characterized by a red, flaky, itchy rash that can appear anywhere on the body. Eczema has been linked to dry skin so daily moisturization is a key to controlling this condition. The itchy nature of Eczema leads to scratching which can result in broken, inflamed skin that is susceptible to infection.
Although there is no cure for Eczema, it can be controlled effectively. Prescribed corticosteroid creams or ointments and oral antihistamines are common treatments that control inflammation and itching. If infection does occur, antibiotics may be prescribed.
